Using the Greek alphabet, Professor Xavier -- with the help of Doctor Henry McCoy has developed a system to loosely categorize mutants. However, due to the uncertainty of the mutations that the X-Gene can cause, much is still left unknown:
OMEGA - Mutants in this category are nearly invincible, their powers are god-like. They are said to possess the ability to destroy or severely warp reality, are immortal, etc. To Xavier's knowledge, there are no known OMEGA level mutants at this time.
--- Comic Based Example: Apocalypse
ALPHA - Mutants in this category are very powerful, but not on the scale of an OMEGA. Due to the raw nature of their power, some are believed to be capable of ascending to OMEGA level. In terms of physical looks, they appear to be human but may have a debilitating mutation which sets them apart slightly, not enough to draw attention from a normal human. Aside of himself, Xavier is not aware of any other ALPHA level mutants.
--- Comic Based Example: Professor X
DELTA - These mutants have powers or mutations almost as powerful as ALPHA leveled, but are capped and have a weakness that can be exploited to stop them. They more than likely look human, but there's something not right with their appearance which would give them away. Xavier believes this is the most common mutant classification level for the others in the world.
--- Comic Based Example: Beast
GAMMA - Mutants in this category have low level powers such as the ability of flight, breathing underwater or to see in the dark. Mutants in this category also always only have one [minor] ability, never more than that. They're usually extremely limited to what they're able to do and aren't believed to be able to evolve and advance into another category.
--- Comic Based Example: Jubilee
BETA - These mutants are the lowest level in the classification system. They're hindered with horrible physical deformities for example that will render them unable to live a normal life. They have little powers [if any aside of the deformities from the X-Gene], could appear to be human but are often abandoned and/or killed at an early age.
--- Comic Based Example: Cypher
